life's brief span.
life's brief span has inspired numerous metaphors in literature-it's a dream
a flying shuttle
a mist
a puff of smoke
a sentence written in the sand.
perhaps the most apt symbol has been suggested by Joseph Fuiten
who reckons that
"the dash between the dates"
that short dash separating the birth and death dates on tombstones,
represents the brief span of one's life.
