do hard things.

knowledge is the apprehension of truth.
wisdom is its application to life.

knowledge is prudent judgement.
wisdom is prudent action.

do hard things.
by alex and brett harris

5 types of hard.

1. things that are outside your comfort zone.
- public speaking
- unfamiliar and scary things that isn't what you usually will do

2. things that go beyond what is expected or required.
- volunteering to clean up
- perform household chores you aren't assigned to
- stay late at work without pay to help a friend finish a job
these actions are hard cos they rest entirely on our own initiative. no one will make us do them. pursue excellence, not excuses. don't fall into the trap of complacency.

3. things that are too big to accomplish alone.
- big projects like rallies
- making a film
- fighting and campaigning against abortion/slavery/poverty

4. things that don't earn an immediate payoff.
- obeying parents
- having good studying habits
- keeping fit
- keeping room tidy
- driving within speed limits (even when late)
- holding your temper
- taking care of grandpa/grandma
- spending time with little brother
these are small hard things cos you won't see much progress from one day to the next and because especially at the time, it can seem like you'd be happier if you didn't do them. these are tasks that no one else sees and that don't win you recognition or praise. we do them because they are right, not because they have an immediate payoff. in every case we'll be better off long-term, even though the things are "hard" or distasteful in the short term.

5. things that challenge the cultural norm.
- dressing modestly
- saying no to premarital sex
- holding unpopular positions on homosexuality and abortion
- refusing to watch certain movies
- sharing the gospel
- living as a Christian
these are hard things because they can cost you popularity and friendships, or even your life.
